Schools institute uniform dress

Parents and students at Swainsboro Middle and High Schools and Emanuel County Institute will want to spend some extra time shopping for back to school clothing this summer. Principals are instituting School Uniforms as the standard dress code for grades 6 through 12. The strict guidelines will allow only khaki or black colored pants, skirts, Capri pants, or shorts, and only polo style and oxford style shirts in white, grey, black, and a school color, red for ECI and gold for Swainsboro Middle and High. Only in solid colors. Individual principals can occasionally allow spirit dress days and reward days that follow the current standards.
No vote was required for the measure but it was a hot topic at the workshop meeting Monday of the Emanuel County Board of Education.
Although Board Member Adam Lane questioned whether this was the best way to improve discipline.
Board Member John Torpy commented that this should give administrators more time to concentrate on learning activities.
In the end all supported the principals as long as the dress codes were genuinely enforced.
Board Chair Frank Ellis said if the principals are all for this, “let’s give them a shot.”
Outgoing Superintendent Erma Jenkins also wanted the group to know that a committee will meet after Labor Day to formulate clearer guidelines for the dress of teachers and staff.
