Henry A. (H. A.) Flanders, Jr., 83

Crowe-Fields Funeral Home in Millen announces the death of Henry A. (H. A.) Flanders, Jr., born July 12, 1930 passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013, after an extended illness.
He was a native of Swainsboro, but upon his retirement moved to Millen. Mr. Flanders was a 1946 graduate of Swainsboro High School. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta, at the age of 19, he was the youngest person to ever pass the State Bar of Georgia and was an Emeritus member of the State Bar of Georgia. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, a Mason, and a Methodist. He also served in his early career as Probate Judge of Emanuel County and then worked for the Farm Bureau and later Cotton States Insurance Company, where he retired as Vice President of the Claims and Legal Departments in Atlanta, GA. He also served as a past president of C.C.I.C. Arbitration Committee.
He is predeceased by his parents, Henry A. Flanders and Neta R. Flanders; sister Nan F. Hinton; and son Troy J. Brinson.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jackie P. Flanders, of Millen; two daughters, Mary F. Chatfield of Cumming, GA; Karen F. Burroughs (Jim) of Augusta, GA; great-grandchild Haley F. Chancey and great-great grandchild Braylee Chancey of Lawrenceville, GA; son A. Dean Brinson (Debra); and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, September 17, at 11 a.m. at the Swainsboro City Cemetery with Rev. Jamie Archer and Mike Dann officiating.

Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mrs. Grace C. Smith, age 93, of Swainsboro, GA on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Uni-Health Post Acute Care.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 16, 2013 at 3:00 PM in the Peebles-Curry Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bunny Hudson officiating and assisted by Rev. Dr. Robert Blankenship.
Interment will be in the Eastbrook Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was a native of Portal, GA, retired from Swainsboro Sportswear after many years in quality control, loved gardening, knitting and cooking for family and friends. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Portal, GA and was preceded in death by her husband, James M. “Peter Boy” Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Wendy and Patricia Smith and parents, Freeman Sr. and Margie Hulsey Carter.

Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mrs. Gloria Jean White age 82 of Twin City on Saturday July 13, 2013 at the Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA.

Funeral services will be Monday July 15 at 11 AM at Southside Baptist Church with Rev Earl Warnock and Elder Tommy Rountree officiating.

Interment will be Monday July 15 at 2pm in the Emmit Grove Baptist Church Cemetery near Statesboro.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening at the funeral home from 6-8 PM.

Mrs. White was a native of Bulloch County, and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents Calvin and Eva Shuman Fouse Deal husband Mr. John White and her daughters Mrs. Sue Ellen White Claxton, and Ms. Rebecca Gay.

Charles Griffith, 81

Mr. Charles Dwane Griffith, 81, of Dellwood passed away early Thursday morning July 11, 2013 at the Emanuel Medical Center in Swainsboro following a brief illness.

Mr. Griffith was born in Lansing Michigan to the late Sidney Griffith and Lois Hendershot Griffith.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Winona Renee Griffith.

Mr. Griffith lived in Lansing Michigan until he joined the military in 1951.  Mr. Griffith was in the United States Army and served in the Korea War.  He received the Korean Service Ribbon with Two Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and First Oak Leaf Cluster and other metals during his time in the military.  After serving in the military, Mr. Griffith returned back to Michigan were he was the manager at Estes Furniture Warehouse in Michigan.  In the late 1970’s Mr. Griffith and his family moved to Emanuel County.  He was employed with Adrian Homes as a Security Guard.  Mr. Griffith liked to cook, read, do word puzzles and play dominos.  He attended Dellwood Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Bonnie L. Griffith of Dellwood; daughters, Robbin R. DeLoach of Metter, Nancy Griffith of Swainsboro and April (Jimmy) Barwick of Swainsboro; brothers, Clare Griffith  and Bobby Griffith both of Lansing Michigan; sisters, Geraldine Sherman, Hilda Schilling and Mary Lou Griffith all of Lansing Michigan; sister-in-law, Jackie Baker of Ontonagon Michigan; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the chapel of Chapman Funeral Home at 3 o’clock Sunday, afternoon July 14, 2013 with Rev. Joe Bedgood officiating.  Burial will be in the Eastbrook Cemetery near Swainsboro.

The family will receive friends from 1 pm until time of service at Chapman Funeral Home.

Evelyn Harrison, 96

Mrs. Evelyn Lawson Harrison, 96, of Kite passed away Tuesday morning, July 2, 2013 at the Emanuel County Nursing Home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Harrison was born in Kite and a life long residence of Johnson County.  She was preceded in death by her parents Charlie L. Lawson and Estelle Ricks Lawson; husband, Green Broughton Harrison; brothers, Clyde Lawson and Everett Lawson; sister, Amanda Lou Allen.  Mrs. Harrison retired from Creston Knitting Mill in 1982.  She enjoyed making quilts, gardening and was an excellent cook.  Mrs. Harrison loved hosting family get-togethers.  She was a member of the Kite Homemakers Club.  Mrs. Harrison joined New Home Baptist Church 75 years ago, and was the oldest member of the congregation.

Survivors include her sons, Jimmy (Joyce) Harrison and George (Kathryn) Harrison both of Kite; daughter, Martha (Johnny) Claxton of Kite; sister, Margaret Webb Smith of Adrian; grandchildren, Jan (Vaughn) Hooks of Knoxville TN, John (Jennifer) Harrison of Kite, William (JoAnna) Harrison of Kite, Lisa (Chris) Murawski of Statesville NC, Joey (Valerie) Claxton of Kite, Katrina (Tal) Jones of Kite; great grandchildren, Gracie and Harrison Jones, Garrett and Ella Claire Claxton, Aubrey and Addison Harrison all of Kite.

Funeral services will be held at the New Home Baptist Church at 11 o’clock Friday, morning July 5, 2013 with Reverends Burton Dixon and Allen Meeks officiating.  Mrs. Harrison will Lie in State one hour prior to service.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday July 4, 2013 at Chapman Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hightower was a native of Vidalia, Toombs County, and lived most of her life in Adrian; she was Librarian at Smith State Prison in Glennville, GA, and a member of the Adrian Baptist Church.  Mrs. Hightower was a 1971 graduate of Adrian High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Georgia Southern University.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Hightower; and her parents, William C. and Mary Phyllis Turner Tyson.

Mrs. Edith Ann Renew, 74, of Stillmore passed away Thursday evening, June 27, 2013 at her residence following a brief illness.

Mrs. Renew was born in Swainsboro and was a life-long residence of the Stillmore Community.  She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas L. Thigpen and Editha Collins Thigpen; and sister, Virginia Carol Drew.

Mrs. Renew retired from the Emanuel County Board of Education and the Georgia Department of Corrections in Food Service.  She loved singing, word search puzzles, reading and being with her family.  Mrs. Renew was a member of the Nunez Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Renew of Stillmore; sons, Charles Thomas (Margaret) Renew of Augusta and Gary Allen Renew of Stillmore; daughter, Theresa Carol (Dennis) Davis of Stillmore; grandchildren, Charles Gregory Royal of Savannah, Zoe Michelle (Steven) Schultz of Augusta, Zachery Thomas Renew of Augusta, Jessica Annettee (Devin) Pierce of Stillmore, Thomas Allen (Danielle) Renew of Metter and Auston Matthew Renew of Stillmore; great grandchildren, Lacey Pierce, Payton Pierce and D. Mr. Turner was born in Portal, Bulloch County, Georgia.  He loved his life as a Commercial Fisherman serving ports in Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Key West, Florida and then at his home on Lazaretto Creek in Tybee Island, GA.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James Earl and Maybell Hendley Turner.
